 SSP not showing up sometimes

Hi suprsidr,

We've hit an odd problem where some users do not see the SSP slide show and some do. It does not seem to correlate with Firefox, IE, Mac, Windows, etc. While I was working on it today, my FF 3.0/Win stopped showing the slide show, but I opened IE6/Win and there it was. Then it started working again in FF, without restarting FF -- just reloading the page.

Others testing the site see it sometimes, never, etc. One user on FF/Mac could not see it, but when I changed to a different slide show it showed up for him. He opened the site on another computer in his office, and it would not display.

I'm using the XML version of SSP.

I've checked the XML files and they seem OK.

The "Transferring data ..." status message appears in the browser as if the files are downloading, but nothing is showing in the SSP object.

The site's error and access logs do not show anything weird.

Any suggestions for how to debug, what to try, straws to grasp at, etc.... ?

Thanks,
Patrick

Patrick,
Could be flash player security I suppose. I've found it to be glitchy.
Do you have a crossdomain.xml setup in your site's root?

Thanks suprsidr,

My hunches were:

Maybe the SSP code hangs if the network drops a packet?

Maybe there is a bug in SSP or Flash player that kills photo display. Sometimes, under unknown circumstances.

Maybe the assets are munged in some way and they can't display (but then why does it work SOMETIMES),

Maybe there is a timing issue, where the asset must be downloaded before xxx happens.

I wish there was a way to get more information, like what is it doing when it stops working. Is there a debug parameter for SSP that can dump a trace??

Then I could compare healthy and not-so-healthy cases ...

Meanwhile, I'll test the crossdomain.xml file. What security am I removing, in practical terms?

Thanks,
Patrick

Anywhere you see similar lines:

PHP Formatted Code

            if ($ret) {
                print "Error loading childItems:" . $ret->getAsHtml();
            }

You could change from print to a function to write to a log file if you want.

something like:
PHP Formatted Code

function errorLog($logentry) {

        $logentry = str_replace( array( '<?', '?>' ), array( '(@', '@)' ),
                                 $logentry );

        $timestamp = strftime( '%c' );
                $logfile = '/usr/local/www/vhosts/mysite.com/logs/error.log';

                if( !$file = fopen( $logfile, 'a' ))
                {
                    $retval .= 'slideshow: ' . $logfile . ' (' . $timestamp . ')<br>' . LB;
                }
                else
                {
                    fputs( $file, "$timestamp - $logentry \n" );
                }

}

you can also try to force error reporting by adding the following to the beginning of ssp.php

@ini_set('error_reporting', E_ALL) ;
@ini_set('error_log', 'errors.txt'Wink ; // give full system path to your log file
@ini_set('html_errors', false) ;
@ini_set('error_append_string', " -- ".$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']) ;
@ini_set('log_errors', true) ;
@ini_set('display_errors', true) ;

Thanks I'll give it a shot, but I suspect it is more of a client-side issue.

At least that's my current hunch ...

I want to get the slideshow.swf to do a trace.

Thanks,
Patrick

Well, we have done a little investigating, and it appears that the problem occurs under Windows/IE. If we update to Windows XP SP3, Flash Player 10, and IE8 everything works OK.

But I don't know if we can ask all of the site visitors to do that ...

Well, this being a SlideshowPro/Flash issue, see if there is any mention over at their forums.
You are using swfobject to present your flash aren't you?

We're also working with the SSP support guys on this one, but so far no joy.

Yes, we are using swfobject, and I recall a while back you mentioned something about the newer one having problems ... I wonder if that is the problem. Which version do you recommend?

Thanks,
Patrick

I use swfObject 1.5.x -. swfObject 2.x is the one I don't like.
